Divine Misdemeanors: Merry can take it all

Damn Good Fan Art.

True to form, Divine Misdemeanors was your typical Princess story filled with erotic sex, fairytale creatures living in Los Angeles, and a police investigation about the murder of their miniature counterparts; the demi-fey. Props included: vines, octopus limbs, forked tongues, children’s stories, and seductive Barbie dolls. And you thought your sex life was great. (To check out more of this artist’s work, click here.)

Had this been an Anita Blake novel, this literary review would go different. However, there are certain accommodations made for Princess Meredith that could never be made for Anita. Like the sex. There is only so many times Meredith should be allowed to say she “re-learned how to breathe.” They can’t be all good, right? Much like Anita, Meredith is starting to become too powerful and exceed any limitations—making the story fall a little flat.

The last scene especially is supposed to be action packed. At this point, the reader has spent the entire novel reading about sex drama with intermittent police involvement. You want to see something badass. But instead, Meredith and her men take down the baddies without even much of a fight and both of them are dead within two pages. Where’s the challenge? Praise Meredith, yet again.

Surprisingly, the character driven back story has remained strong throughout this series and it’s a fair assumption that dedicated readers are sticking around for this specifically. It was hard to imagine this series making it past A Lick of Frost. But, it did. Now it’s teetering on the edge of giving Merry her own hybrid sithen. The story has to switch focus because again, Meredith is becoming too strong. Especially since she has already won the throne and then in the same turn renounced it for love. She had it all! Barinthus has a valid

point in this novel when he accuses Meredith of acting womanly instead of queenly; even if he is an arrogant prick of a sea-god. We will stick around to see where this story ends up and we’re hoping for that sithen coupled with some attack of the super-babies.
